The real question is, "Do you need you clubs swingweight matched?". Many people will argue for or against swingweighting and also compare swingweight matching to MOI (Moment of Inertia) matching but the bottom line is if you are truly working to improve your game then Swingweight matching is a great place to start.
Very good golfers can swing a club and tell you whether it needs a little more or less weight in the head of if the length is off just a little. Average golfers looking to have as consistent a set of golf clubs as possible will find that they perform better with a set of matched clubs versus non-matched clubs because they will be more comfortable with how all the clubs in the set "feel".
Golfers trying to gain that level of experience need somewhere to start and having a swingweight matched set of clubs gives you a consistent place to start learning how clubs feel to you and what you like or dislike from one club to the next. As you become more attuned to your swing and how the clubs feel you can then start doing things like adding lead tape to the head to account for feel differences that swingweight may not be able to fix for you.
Basically swingweight measurement is achieved by placing the club on a swingweight scale which looks like a balance with the head on one side and the grip on the other. The fulcrum or balance point is 12 inches from the butt of the club. This means the heavier the club head or long the club is the higher the swingweight will be and the shorter the club is or heavier the butt end is the lighter the swingweight will be. Therefore swingweight can be adjusted by adding or removing weight from the head of the club, adding or removing weight from the butt of the club, changing the length of the club, or changing the weight of the shaft by using a different shaft but that is not as effective.
My practice in swingweighting a club is choose a head and shaft combination that should place the finished club at or below the target swingweight then add weight to the club head as necessary.
If we are looking at an existing set of clubs and the swingweight is too high my first recommendation will be to replace the shaft even though this costs more. You can add weight to the butt of the club. The second option is to consider the length of the club to see if we can shorten them.
